Europe-wide enforcement: what’s the latest?

ROADPOL’s latest published results (from its March 2024 seat belt operation) reported:

• 1,256,932 vehicles inspected
• 94,771 total violations detected (ROADPOL records the total due to differences in how countries categorise violations)

For 2026, ROADPOL’s calendar lists Operation Seatbelt: 9–15 March 2026.

What’s the penalty in the UK right now?

For Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales), GOV.UK states you can be fined up to £500 if you do not wear a seat belt when you’re supposed to. Government consultation material published in January/February 2026 also summarises the current typical sanction as a £100 fixed penalty, or up to £500 if it goes to court, and notes it is not currently endorsable (no penalty points) in Great Britain.

Possible change: penalty points under consultation

The same 2026 consultation asks whether failing to wear a seat belt (and failing to ensure children are suitably restrained) should also attract 3 penalty points in future.

Northern Ireland is different

nidirect states that in Northern Ireland, drivers may face a fine of £500 and three penalty points for not wearing a seat belt, with similar penalties for failing to ensure a child under 14 is properly restrained.

Practical seat belt reminders for van drivers and fleets

• Driver and passengers must belt up when a belt is fitted (with only limited exceptions).
• Don’t let “short drops” become your bad habit: repeated stopping is where drivers are most tempted to skip belts.
• Children: make sure child restraints are correct for age/height rules (and fitted properly), especially in crew cabs.
• Workplace policy: if you run a fleet, set a simple rule — van doesn’t move until everyone is belted, and supervisors back it up.
